·       Improvements to Parker/Arapahoe Road intersection begin

·       OFFICIALS BREAK GROUND ON THE PARKER ROAD/ARAPAHOE ROAD INTERSECTION PROJECT

·       Arapahoe County June 21, 2010 the Colorado Department of  Transportation (CDOT) and the Arapahoe  Country Board of County Commissioners held a groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of construction on the final phase of the Parker Road/Arapahoe Road interchange improvement project.  The $32 million project will construct a grade-separated interchange that will carry Parker Road over Arapahoe Road.

·       “We have seen tremendous growth at this intersection in recent years and know it will continue in the future,” said CDOT Deputy Executive Director Peggy Catlin. “With this  long-awaited and much needed project, a fully-functional interchange that will be constructed, allowing for additional growth while providing an improved transportation facility for motorists.”

·       Currently, the intersection carries 110,000 vehicles a day and projections show that traffic volumes will increase to 170,000 vehicles a day by 2030.  The grade separated interchange will better accommodate the higher traffic volumes while improving safety and mobility.

·       The intersection will become a full interchange with ramps and limited traffic signals. Free-flowing traffic on Parker Road will benefit Arapahoe Road by eliminating the red light signal time on Arapahoe Road that is currently needed to provide for the Parker Road through movement.

·       In addition, the interchange, as a whole, will be designed to better handle traffic during peak travel times.  The triple-lane ramp from southbound Parker Road to westbound Arapahoe Road will remain in place and a two-lane ramp from eastbound Arapahoe Road to northbound Parker Road will be constructed in the southeast corner.

·       Improvements to this intersection have been planned since 1998 when an Environmental Assessment (EA) was completed.  In the 12 years following, Arapahoe County and CDOT have worked together to find funding for the project, completing the smaller phases along the way.

·       “When we disacovered in 2001 that this project might not happen for another 30 years, it was unacceptable, so we set our sights on a different path for funding,” said Commissioner Susan Beckman, who has worked over the last 10 years to help Arapahoe County secure the funds necessary to begin the next phase of improvements to Parker and Arapahoe Roads. “Projects like Parker and Arapahoe don’t just happen.  It takes a lot of hard work and tenacity to push them through to completion.  I’m very proud of the Board of County Commissioners in Arapahoe County for never wavering in their commitment and for coming up with the entire local match of $9 million to make this project a reality.”

·       The first project was completed in 2002 when the tripe-lane ramp was constructed from southbound Parker Road to westbound Arapahoe Road.  The project was followed by a project in 2007 that constructed the ring road which intersects at Arapahoe Road and Lewiston Way, just east of Parker Road.  This road will eventually be part of the off-ramp from northbound Parker Road to Arapahoe Road while still providing access to the businesses along the road.

·       The most recent improvements took place in 2008 and 2009 when southbound Parker Road was widened between Lewiston Way and the ramp to westbound Arapahoe Road.  The project also constructed a sound wall as identified in the 1998 EA.

·       The total cost (design, right of way acquisition and construction) for all phases is $50.4 million, including $26.4 million in federal funds, $15.1 million in state funds and $8.9 million from Arapahoe County.

·       Hamon Construction, Inc. is the contractor of the final project, which should be completed by the end of November 2011.

·       For more information about the project visit http://www.coloradodot.info/projects/ParkerArapahoe to receive e-mail updates about the project, visit www.coloradodot.info and click on the icon in the upper right-hand corner.  The link will take you to a list of items you can subscribe to including the Parker Road/ Arapahoe Road project listed under “Projects.”

·       Neighborhood Watch June 2010

·       Please be on the lookout for this van!!! It was seen shortly after the last burglary in Smoky Hill 400 on May 19.  Early to mid 1950’s panel van. Curved/rounded top… looks like a twinkie on wheels.  Windows only on driver and passenger door.  Very faded dull black primer paint. Call 303-795-4711.

·       Leaving on vacation or just for a day or two – use the “Buddy System” – notify a neighbor you can trust to keep an eye on your house.  Share your information about who comes & goes to your home and how to reach you, be alert at all times. No one has caught the burglars in our area so we all need to be very aware of our surroundings.  Don’t forget to lock your doors and windows when you leave home, check side garage doors, connect automatic light timers, etc.

·       Also, we have a lot of foxes roaming the streets and yards and coming into open garages right in front of the homeowners, so be aware of their presence and watch your pets and children.  They are hungry and not afraid of people. ·       Thefts from Vehicles

·       The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office wants to work with you to prevent criminal activity.  Thefts from Motor Vehicles are crimes in which, thieves take valuables from parked cars, usually without stealing the cars. These can frequently be prevented. Here are some tips that may prevent you from becoming a victim:

·       Always completely roll up your windows and lock your vehicle doors when parked. Don’t be an easy target.  Breaking in to vehicles quietly takes longer, and smashing a window makes noise, both of which may attract attention.

·       Remove valuables when parking for long periods. Parking overnight at home or in parking lots for long periods such as at the airport, a sporting event, when out to dinner and a movie are when thieves have the longest opportunity to strike.

·       Hide valuables when parking for short periods. When parking while running errands, packages and bags with store logos can be inviting targets. Secure them in the trunk or cover them.

·       Put vehicle accessories like handicapped parking placards, GPS units, satellite radios, and radar detectors in the glove box or console when you  park  the vehicle for long periods. These items are frequent targets for thieves.

·       Whenever possible, park your vehicles in a closed and locked garage.

·       If garage parking is not possible, park in your driveway or in a well lit lot or area.  Consider motion lights aimed at your driveway to deter thieves and provide extra safety as you enter and exit your vehicles at night.  Well lit areas on a street or in a lot are better than darked areas.

·       Report all suspicious persons and activities to the Sheriff’s Office immediately. People trying door handles, looking into parked cars, etc. should be reported.

·       If you have any questions, contact Deputy Amir Stephen at (720) 874-3752, e-mail astephen@co.arapahoe.co.us, or contact Deputy Brian McKnight at (720) 874-3750, e-mail bmcknight@co.arapahoe.co. us.

·       To report a crime, call the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office at (303) 795-4711 or 911 for emergencies.

·       Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Implements Innovative Biometric Identification System

·       The Sheriff’s Office on Feb. 5, 2010 announced that they were awarded a grant to implement an innovative identification system based upon iris recognition biometric technology.  The technology grant is the lst to be awarded in the state of Colorado by the National Sheriff’s Association, with funding provided by the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program.  The purpose of the grant is to provide an opportunity for selected sheriff’s offices to implement the innovative biometric technology system to protect children, protect senior citizens, to better identify and track registered sex offenders and to enhance the identification of inmates.  The technology provided through the grant will enable the Arapahoe County Dheriff’s Office to join sheriffs and law enforcement agencies across the nation who have implemented The Child Project, Senior Safety Net, Inmate Recognition and Identification System (I.R.I.S.) and Sex Offender Registry and Identification System(SORIS).  The system enables law enforcement  agencies to enroll, identify, and locate missing children and adults through the use of iris recognition biometric technology.

·       Arapahoe Road & I-25 Interchange Construction to Begin September 28, 2009

·       Construction to improve the traffic flow at Arapahoe Rd and I-25 begins on Monday September 28.  Message Boards approaching the interchange now advise the public of the upcoming construction.  Major construction will be completed in January 2010, weather permitting.

·       The project will add an additional through lane in each direction underneath the I-25 bridge structure by utilizing the existing on-ramp roadway.  This means that the 3rd lane will be separated from the existing through lanes by bridge pillars. Other improvements include an additional dedicated turn lane from westbound Arapahoe Rd. to northbound Yosemite St., and modifications to the center median to improve left turn movement from southbound I-25 to eastbound Arapahoe Rd.  These are interim fixes until funding is available for reconstruction of the full interchange sometime in the future.

·       The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is managing the construction and funding the improvements from leftover TREX funds of about $4 million.

·       Work will begin on the Southwest corner of the interchange and the south sidewalk will be closed. All travel lanes are expected to be open except for periodic lane closures for utility work. Many of the larger modifications will be done overnight in order to keep daytime traffic moving.

·        OPEN AREA FIRE THREATENS STRUCTURES IN CENTENNIAL

·       Feb. 2, 2009 – shortly after twelve-noon Cunningham Fire Rescue responded on an open area fire behind houses in the 5300 block of South Lisbin Way in Centennial. The fire was contained within the Tollgate Park Open Space which is located between South Picadilly Street and South Williamette Ave.

·       The fire involved brush and ground cover in an open area that is surrounded by homes on both sides that are part of the Parkview subdivision. The fire was quickly brought under control.despite the fact that terrain and limited access to the area posed to be a bit of a challenge for fire suppression crews and apparatus getting into the area to suppress the fire.  Wind was also a factor that caused the fire to move rapidly.  Cunningham Fire received assistance from the South Metro Fir Authority and the Aurora Fire Department.  There were approximately 50 firefighters and 17 units on-scene.

·       The fire, which is being estimated to be three acres in size, was extinguished in approximately fifty minutes, and although structures were threatened none were damaged.  Witnesses in the area were able to identify a general area where the fire started and cause is under investigation.

·       Cunningham Fire would like to remind everyone that conditions are very dry and as a result the potential for a brush or ground cover fire to quickly spread and threaten structures is very high.

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

DON’T BE A STATISTIC! HELP PREVENT AUTO THEFT

Auto theft is a crime of opportunity. One of the biggest problems facing the Sheriff’s Office is “puffers”. What are puffers?  Puffers are cars left running, unattended.  Many times in the winter, a person will leave their car running outside their residences for it to warm up.  Some puffers are cars left out side stores or businesses with the intention of keeping the car warm in cold weather.  After all, you’re only going to be inside for a minute, right?  Well, a minute is all a car thief needs.  Don’t become a statistic.  The good news is, as with many crimes of opportunity, there are things you can do to decrease your chance of becoming a victim.

*Don’t leave your car running unattended. (Did you know that it is illegal in the state of Colorado to leave your keys in a running vehicle? CRS 42-4-1206)

*Always close and secure your garage door. (N0 matter the time of day. Thieves are always looking for the split second they need to take something you worked hard for.)

*Do not  leave keys in your vehicle. (Even if you lock your car it only takes a second for a car thief to break the window and make off with your car.)

*Remove your valuables from your vehicle when you’re not in it (This is most important when shopping at a mall or grocery store.)

*Always lock your doors. (A car thief will look for the cars that aren’t locked first because those are the easiest targets.)

*Report all suspicious persons and activities to the Sheriff’s Office immediately.

There are no guarantees in life, however following these simple safety suggestions will help to reduce the chances that you may become the victim of an auto thief. To report a crime call 303-795-4711.

TRI-County Health Department - from Gary Sky, Public Information Officer (303) 846-6245 MUMPS OUTBREAK - because of a large outbreak of mumps occurring across the Midwestern United States, Tri-County Health Department is urging parents to review their children's immunizations records to be sure that they are up-to-date on mumps immunizations. The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) should be administered at ages 12 to 15 months, with a second immunization at 4 to 6 years, for a total of two doses for children under 18 years of age. Adults should also get the MMR vaccine. Generally, anyone who was born after 1956 should have had at least one dose, unless they can show that they have either the MMR vaccine or the disease. Most people of this age group have had the vaccine, because it was a requirement for enrollment in the public school system.
